Chances are, if you aren’t actively listening to a podcast (or two, or 10), you’ve probably heard of them. Podcasts are pretty much everywhere nowadays. And, there are podcasts for almost everything you could ever think of. But, what exactly is a podcast, and why should you care? You’ve got a lot going on, so how do podcasts fit into the picture?
Great questions! Let’s chat about those and more commonly asked podcast questions.
What’s a Podcast?
According to the dictionary (yes, it’s in the dictionary!), a podcast is “a digital audio file made available on the internet for downloading to a computer or mobile device, typically available as a series, new installments of which can be received by subscribers automatically.”
Basically, it’s a radio show but not on the radio “ on your phone, computer, tablet, smart assistant, etc. Perfect for getting your daily dose of news, information, entertainment, and more on-the-go.
Why Should I Listen to Podcasts?
So, you know what a podcast is. But, why should you care to listen? One reason: It’s easy and accessible. Like I said, you can listen on your phone, computer, tablet, or smart assistant. The second reason: There are so many options available when it comes to podcast topics and shows, so you can find something to pique your interest, help you learn, or just give you something entertaining to do instead of listening to music, reading, or watching TV. Because it’s so easy to listen to podcasts, you can be entertained, catch up on the latest news, be inspired, or more “ at any time!
Some of my favorite times to listen to podcasts:
- During a commute
- On a plane or a road trip
- At work
- At the gym
- While cleaning the house
I feel more productive listening to a podcast than when I listen to music, and it gives me something to look forward to knowing my favorite podcasts have new episodes coming out all the time.
How Do I Find a Podcast to Listen to?
I covered some top podcasts in a range of topics in this blog post to give you an idea of what’s out there, but you can also do some searches on iTunes, Google Play, or by conducting a search on your favorite search engine to find a podcast that aligns with your interests.
For example, I like to listen to podcasts for entertainment and to learn. For entertainment podcasts, I just searched for something related to my interests (reality TV), and found a few that I now love. For educational podcasts, I’ve been listening to a podcast from Duolingo that tells stories in easy-to-understand Spanish, so when I’m not using the app to help me learn new words, I can listen to some episodes and improve my vocabulary.
In the marketing and business world, there are a lot of podcasts out there that aim to inspire, instruct, and inform about the industry, emerging trends, and more, so you can increase your knowledge and expertise while you’re going about your day-to-day.
How Do I Listen to Podcasts?
Now that I’ve convinced you that podcasts are the next great thing in your life this year, you want to know how to listen, right? Luckily, it’s pretty easy. If you have an iPhone, you’ve probably seen the Podcasts app loaded on your phone “ just open that bad boy up, find a podcast, and start listening! If you have an Android, you can download Google Podcasts that works the same way.
On your desktop, you can use the iTunes or Google Play apps to listen to podcasts, or you can find your favorite podcast online. Most have their own websites you can visit to listen on directly, or they might redirect you to another podcast hosting site to listen.
Once you find a podcast you want to start listening to, you can subscribe so the latest episode will be downloaded to your device or so you’ll be notified. You can also leave a review so other listeners or potential listeners know what you like (or don’t like) about the podcast.
